Design Protection -

Learn how to better secure your product design

Designs protect the appearance of products such as furniture, clothing, fabrics, vehicles, packaging, icons, screen content, and logos. Also, parts of products, for example the sole of a shoe, can be protected in isolation. Protection and thus a temporally limited monopoly, is thus granted for the external form and color design of a product. Design protection can also be achieved for a product as a supplement to technical property rights: the profile of a car tire has a technical effect and is therefore accessible to patent and utility model protection. However, since the profile of a car tire is not exclusively technical, a design protection can additionally be achieved.

The presentation will explain the most important substantive protection requirements, the search, procedural aspects of a design application and the examination and registration procedure. Design protection abroad, for example as an EU or international design application, as well as infringement and invalidity proceedings are discussed. All in all, the most important basics of design law should be conveyed from the point of view of practice, as a tool to differentiate between competitors.

The lecture is aimed at managing directors, development engineers, practitioners and students.
